Amorphous diamond: a high-pressure superhard carbon allotrope.
Compressing glassy carbon above 40 GPa, we have observed a new carbon allotrope with a fully sp(3)-bonded amorphous structure and diamondlike strength. Synchrotron x-ray Raman spectroscopy revealed a continuous pressure-induced sp(2)-to-sp(3) bonding change, while x-ray diffraction confirmed the perseverance of noncrystallinity. The transition was reversible upon releasing pressure. Used as an ...
متن کاملCarbyne: The rational synthesis of an sp-hybridized carbon allotrope
Carbon allotropes from sp-hybridized carbon (diamond) and sp-hybridized carbon (graphite, graphene, fullerenes, nanotubes) have well-established properties, many of which are technologically relevant. A carbon allotrope constructed from sp-hybridized carbon atoms (carbyne), on the other hand, remains rare and presents a challenging synthetic goal. In recent years, we have developed methods for ...
متن کاملAb initio structure determination of n-diamond
A systematic computational study on the crystal structure of n-diamond has been performed using first-principle methods. A novel carbon allotrope with hexagonal symmetry R32 space group has been predicted. We name it as HR-carbon. HR-carbon composed of lonsdaleite layers and unique C3 isosceles triangle rings, is stable over graphite phase above 14.2 GPa. The simulated x-ray diffraction pattern...
متن کاملBody-centered tetragonal C4: a viable sp3 carbon allotrope.
We have investigated by first principles the electronic, vibrational, and structural properties of bct C4, a new form of crystalline sp{3} carbon recently found in molecular dynamics simulations of carbon nanotubes under pressure. This phase is transparent, dynamically stable at zero pressure, and more stable than graphite beyond 18.6 GPa. Coexistence of bct C4 with M carbon can explain better ...
متن کاملSize tunable synthesis of solution processable diamond nanocrystals.
Diamond nanocrystals were synthesized catalyst-free from nanoporous carbon at high pressure and high temperature (HPHT). The synthesized nanocrystals have tunable diameters between 50 and 200 nm. The nanocrystals are dispersible in organic solvents such as acetone and are isotropic in nature as seen by dynamic light scattering.
